Data sources and standards
Every figure on GridCensus traces to a source you can open. Click a dotted-underlined number anywhere on the site to see who published it, when we read it, the specific record behind it, and how far it can be trusted on its own.
How we rank sources
From most to least authoritative. When two sources disagree, the higher tier wins.
- 1Grid operator or utility (primary)The organization that runs the system, publishing about its own system. The gold standard for that system: use it as-is and cite it.
- 2Federal agency (primary)A federal statistical survey or official dataset. Authoritative and citable; usually annual, so it lags recent change.
- 3Compiled geospatial datasetA national compilation from many owners (HIFLD, OpenStreetMap, national labs). Broad coverage, but records can lag upgrades and retirements; confirm specifics with the owner.
- 4GridCensus model (derived)Calculated by GridCensus from the inputs listed. A screening estimate: it ranks and points to where to look, it does not replace the utility's study.
- 5GridCensus research (curated)Read by GridCensus from filings, dockets and press. Flagged "verify" until checked against the original filing.
